How Does Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Work?

You’ve probably heard of Brazilian butt lift surgery before, but you may be less familiar with what occurs during the procedure and how the surgery produces the desired results. If you’re thinking about undergoing BBL surgery, it helps to have a general understanding of how the procedure works so that you know what to expect and can make the decisions that are right for you.

How BBL Surgery is Performed

The goal of a Brazilian butt lift is to add volume, definition, and balance to the buttocks region. Many individuals imagine that implants are surgically inserted into the area to achieve this effect. However, while that is one type of procedure that can be performed, a Brazilian butt lift is actually quite different. It involves harvesting fat from one area of the body and then injecting it into the buttocks.

More specifically, traditional BBL surgery begins with liposuction in the stomach or “love handle” areas of the body where most people carry some fat. There are alternative locations where fat can be collected in skinnier individuals as well. The fat cells that are collected during this stage are then purified and isolated. What’s left is the prepared fat cells that will then be injected into the buttocks. Because the fat cells come from your own body, there are no foreign objects involved.

Your cosmetic surgeon will determine the placement of fat injections to help meet your specific goals.

What Happens After a Brazilian Butt Lift

While the procedure itself is fairly simple and straightforward, a lot of the effects of the Brazilian butt lift will occur in the six to nine months following the procedure. During this time, the injected fat cells will be partially absorbed back into the body. The remaining fat cells need to integrate with your body to provide the volume and definition you desire.

This is why it’s important to avoid sitting down for several weeks following BBL surgery. You don’t want to flatten the injected fat cells, leaving them unable to receive blood flow to integrate with the body. During this period, you’ll also need to wear a compression garment to help reduce bruising and hold loose skin in place while you recover.

After four to six months, you’ll have a better idea of the full results of the BBL surgery. The fat cells that have survived will provide the desired volume and definition, and the results can last in the long-term. How long will partly depend on how well you maintain the weight you carried at the time of the Brazilian butt lift. Maintaining that same weight can help achieve the results you’re looking for.
