How to Prepare for a Brazilian Butt Lift

Not only has the world made a push towards more body positivity in recent years, but it has also become more normalized to undergo cosmetic changes. One cosmetic surgery in particular that has grown in popularity is the Brazilian butt lift, which includes harvesting fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks. This demand for BBLs stems from the fact that more people are favoring curvier, hourglass silhouettes.

If you’ve been considering having a Brazilian butt lift done, you’re likely conducting plenty of research beforehand. From the surgery specifics to the recovery afterwards, there is a lot of information to take in. One of the most important parts to consider, though, is how to prepare for a Brazilian butt lift. While it’s a cosmetic procedure, it’s still that: a procedure. So, there are certain steps you’ll want to take or directions you’ll want to follow beforehand.

Consult Your Cosmetic Surgeon

This should be your starting point. Find a highly experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon that you can trust and sit down with them to discuss your reasons for wanting a Brazilian butt lift. Your surgeon will not only be able to determine if a BBL is right for you, but also provide you with specific pre-op directions.

Take Time Off Work

Since you must limit any sitting or physical activity after surgery, you’ll want to take some time off of work while you recover from your BBL—if you’re able to, request a week or two off to rest. If you can’t take this much vacation time, try to take at least a few days off and then buy a pillow or donut to sit on during the rest of your recovery time.

Stop Drinking & Smoking

If you smoke or use any nicotine products, you should stop at least two weeks before your procedure. Smoking prevents healing since it increases your risk of blood clots, raises your risk of infection, and increases inflammation, so it’s best to quit as far in advance as possible. You’ll also want to limit your alcohol intake because it is a known blood thinner, hindering your blood cells from being able to stick together and clot properly.

Arrange a Ride

A Brazilian butt lift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general or local anesthesia. Because of this, you won’t be able to drive yourself home from the cosmetic surgery clinic and will need to have someone take you and wait or pick you up. You might even want to have them help you out for a few days around the house after the procedure.
