What Are the Most Common Cosmetic Surgeries?

Cosmetic surgery has certainly grown in popularity over the years, with almost 18 million procedures taking place in the United States annually. It also seems that as the number of cosmetic surgeries performed increases, the stigma surrounding them disappears. Instead of people raising their noses in judgement or lying about having work done, many are now being more accepting and transparent about any procedures that they have received.

With cosmetic surgery becoming more popular and normalized, you may find yourself more interested in possibly having a procedure done. Or, perhaps you’re just curious which ones are being performed most frequently. In no particular order, here are some of the most common cosmetic surgeries:

Rhinoplasty

The more informal name for rhinoplasty is a nose job. As the center component of the face, the nose can be a source of self-consciousness for many people. Rhinoplasties are one of the most common types of cosmetic surgeries because they can be performed not only for appearance purposes but also medical reasons. Many people undergo this surgery for breathing problems, such as a deviated septum.

Liposuction

While diet and exercise are always encouraged to help lose weight and tone muscles, you can’t spot-reduce fat. If someone has a stubborn area of fat that they can’t seem to work off, liposuction is an alternative method. This surgical procedure suctions fat from specific areas, most commonly the stomach, love handles, thighs, or upper arms.

Blepharoplasty

This eyelid reshaping surgery, often referred to as ‘bleph’, can be done for cosmetic reasons or to improve vision in patients where the eyelids obstruct vision. The overall goal of a blepharoplasty is to repair ‘droopy’ eyelids and may involve removing excess skin, muscle and fat.

Breast Augmentation

Augmentation means the action or process of making or becoming greater in size or amount. So, a breast augmentation involves enlarging one’s breasts. This process can be done using breast implants or fat transfer from other parts of the body. An augmentation can also be paired with a breast lift to correct sagging or drooping breasts.

Abdominoplasty

This procedure is frequently referred to as a ‘tummy tuck’, and sometimes even a ‘lower body lift’. An abdominoplasty removes excess fat and sagging skin from the lower stomach and tightens the abdominal muscles to provide a more defined and potentially slimmer look. While anyone can choose to undergo this procedure, it’s especially common after significant weight loss or multiple pregnancies.
