Which Is Better: Botox® or Dermal Fillers?

Close up of a woman receiving injections into her lipsThe bias and negativity around facial fillers has shifted significantly in recent years. Fillers have become far more normalized and welcomed, also resulting in a range of options being available for people to pick from. This also means that different types of fillers have been created to produce slightly different results, with a prime example being Botox and dermal fillers. While both injectables can be used for wrinkle treatment, they also have other characteristics and uses that set them apart. Get a full run-down of each so that you can decide which is better for you.

Botox Basics

Botulinum toxin type A, or Botox, is a product that nearly everyone has heard about, but few know exactly what it is. Botox itself is a muscle relaxer, which likely sparked the negative “it freezes your face” myth. As a wrinkle treatment, Botox primarily targets dynamic wrinkles, which occur naturally around the eyes and mouth, as well as in between your eyebrows. The injections relax the muscles near these wrinkles, reducing their appearance.

In addition to wrinkles, Botox can also be used to treat neurological disorders that cause muscle weakness, migraines, and other medical conditions.

Details of Dermal Filler

Dermal fillers are also used to treat wrinkles and come in different forms, such as calcium hydroxylapatite, collagen, hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, and others. They’re primarily used to treat smile lines, though dermal fillers can also be used to plump up the lips or cheeks. In some cases, they can also be injected to fill in or soften the look of recessed scars.

So, Which Filler Is Better?

The best facial filler for you will depend on what you’re trying to target, how often you want to keep up with them, and the sensitivity of your skin/any allergies you have. For areas around your eyes, Botox may be the right choice whereas dermal fillers are better suited for the mouth area. Results vary from person to person, but Botox generally lasts anywhere from 3 to 4 months. Each specific type of dermal filler has a varying length of results, but overall, they tend to last longer than Botox. While neither last forever, if you’re hoping for a lower-maintenance approach then you may consider dermal fillers. If you do go this route, keep in mind any allergies or sensitivities you have to ensure you’re not picking one that will cause a negative reaction.
