Non-Opioid Oral Surgery

We are one of the few oral surgery clinics in the area that can administer ketamine, propofol, or another non-opioid sedation medication. And, to help with postsurgical pain, we can administer EXPAREL^®, which is a long-acting local anesthetic that is administered during the procedure while the patient is still under sedation. This ensures pain is at a manageable level when the patient wakes up from surgery, reducing the need for narcotic medication. This anesthetic will release into the soft tissue of the surgical site for 72 hours, so patients may only need over-the-counter medication to control their pain in the days following their procedure.

The ability to offer non-opioid options for oral surgery is particularly beneficial for younger patients. Typically, these patients’ first introduction to opioid medication is from procedures such as wisdom teeth removal. Parents are typically relieved to learn that we can offer an opioid-free experience for their children.
