No Bone, No Problem With Zygomatic Dental Implants
It’s a dilemma for so many people: They want traditional dental implants but have been told by oral surgeon after oral surgeon that they just don’t have enough bone for a successful procedure. Thankfully, there’s now an innovative solution—zygomatic dental implants. Dr. Manik S. Bedi at Tampa Surgical Arts is one of the few oral surgeons who provides these implants in the Tampa Bay area, and we’ll be glad to discuss this procedure with you.
What Are Zygomatic Dental Implants?
Zygomatic implants are designed specifically for people who have bone loss in their mouths. Instead of anchoring the implants into the jawbone as traditional dental implants are, they are placed in the cheekbone. This area of the mouth is very dense and can provide great support for implants. Zygomatic implants are also tilted and much longer than traditional implants.
How Is This Procedure Performed?
In many cases, getting zygomatic implants is a quick procedure that can take as little as one day. That’s because bone grafting is not required for zygomatic implants, significantly reducing the treatment and recovery time for patients.

These implants are composed of three parts:
The Implant
The actual implant is a titanium post that looks like a screw and is embedded below the gum line. Through a process called osseointegration, these implants will naturally fuse with the cheekbone over time.
Abutments
The abutments connect the implant to the arch (aka, the prosthetic teeth). These abutments can sometimes be angled to properly connect a slanted implant with the arch.
Arch
The arch is the prosthetic teeth. It is made of zirconia and looks and functions like real teeth. These new teeth will be durable, strong, and permanent as long as they are properly taken care of over the years (just like regular teeth!).
Should You Consider Zygomatic Implants?
If you’ve been told repeatedly that you are not a candidate for traditional dental implants due to bone loss in your jaw, then you are the ideal patient for zygomatic implants. As we like to say at Tampa Surgical Arts: No bone, no problem! You’ll be able to have the beautiful smile you’ve always dreamed about with these implants. Other benefits of zygomatic implants include:
- It’s a less invasive procedure since there is no bone grafting (which can be painful and requires months of recovery). In many cases, one office visit is all it takes for zygomatic implants!
- The recovery period is quick and relatively painless. You’ll be able to start eating normal food within a day or two and should experience very little discomfort in the days following your surgery.
