Can Your Body Reject a Brazilian Butt Lift?

As Brazilian butt lifts rise in popularity, so do the conversations and rumors surrounding them. With so many different ways for people to communicate nowadays, especially online, facts can get skewed or just flat out incorrect information can be shared. This can cause people researching Brazilian butt lifts to be confused about the details of the procedure and distinguishing between fact or fiction. One example of a false narrative is the idea that your body can reject a BBL. If you recently heard or read this, you can put your mind at ease that it isn’t true—here’s why.

No Implants Are Involved

Some cosmetic surgeries, such as butt or breast lifts, involve implants. Implants are typically made from silicone, a material well-tolerated by the body. However, they are ultimately foreign objects and in rare cases, the body can react excessively to having these implants inserted and produce too much fibrous tissue which can deform the implants. Because ‘butt lift’ is in the name, many people incorrectly assume that a BBL involves implants, but this isn’t the case and therefore this rare complication doesn’t apply to this procedure.

Your Own Fat Is Used

Another reason why someone might think their body can reject a BBL is because of transplant rejection. This is a process in which a transplant recipient’s immune system attacks the transplanted organ or tissue. However, this happens when the transplant—typically some type of organ—is from another person and the immune system doesn’t recognize the antigens or cells. With a Brazilian butt lift, your own fat cells are harvested and injected back into your body, so there’s nothing foreign about them!

Most Fat Survives

The rumor that your body can reject a BBL might also stem from the fact that not 100% of the fat that is injected will survive. While it depends on the patient and how well they follow post-op directions, usually about 80% of the fat grafts survive. Experienced cosmetic surgeons are well aware of this, though, and will inject a slightly higher amount at first to compensate for this natural process.
